When the government expanded the highway running in front of NCH, one of the walls was torn down. The government did not offer assistance to rebuild, nor did they provide compensation to the children's home for destroying their wall. Since then, our national partners have worked to protect our sponsored children but unfortunately, over time and for different reasons, the walls that they would reconstruct continued to be taken down.
The idea to build a more permanent structure was born, and last year the Board of Directors agreed to provide some of the financing from the ministry's reserves. Many donors gave toward the project as well. Many of you helped meet this need and offered protection as well as a means of provision for our national partners at NCH. Our national partners decided it would be safer to move the entrance of the compound from the main road(where it had been previously) to the back side of the compound. This new structure will not only provide protection for our children by giving the compound a more permanent divider from the dangers of a busy highway and foot traffic, but it will also provide our national partners financial sustainability in the uncertain years ahead.
The hope is that soon, another level will be added to the building. This second level will house small apartments for the owners of the shops below. This is a common setup for many storefronts in this region and would provide more income for NCH to continue functioning in the future. The project's planner and builders were forward-thinking and built this structure in a way that can be easily done.
